What To Know Before Shopping for a Pokémon Gift
Buying a gift for someone with a hobby you don’t know much about can be difficult. When it comes to Pokemon cards, the learning curve can be pretty steep. There are many different characters, different types of card rarities, and even cards that come in different languages. Even if you can’t read Japanese Pokémon cards or don’t know the difference between Umbreon and Flareon, you can still use this Pokémon gift guide to buy a gift your friend or family member will love!
For the first part of this Pokémon gift guide, we recommend figuring out what types of Pokémon cards they like to collect. There are multiple ways to collect Pokémon, so don’t be afraid to ask what they like!
Some of the most popular Pokémon are Pikachu, Charizard, and Mew. Knowing which Pokémon they like can help narrow down your search. Celebrations has a bunch of great Pikachu cards. Obsidian Flames is a good set for Charizard fans. Paldean Fates is a favorite for Mew collectors looking to pull the iconic Bubble Mew.
Other collectors prefer to build complete sets or competition decks, with some preferring graded or ungraded cards. Ask the person you’re buying for if there are any specific cards they’re still searching for, or if they collect cards that are graded, ungraded, or both.
One more thing to know is whether your friend or family member collects vintage or modern Pokémon cards. Most collectors love both, but some prefer to stick to one or the other. Some vintage favorites are Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Pikachu, Lugia, and Gengar from original sets like the Base Set, Fossil, Jungle, Neo Era, Aquapolis, Skyridge, and Team Rocket.
Some of the biggest chases for modern collectors are Umbreon ex from Prismatic Evolutions, Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex from Mega Evolutions, and Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex from Destined Rivals. While these cards can get expensive, modern Pokémon collectors will appreciate a pack or box from these sets.
