How to Identify Cards Worth Grading

Getting sports and trading cards graded is a big part of the hobby. Some collectors just like the look of graded cards or the added security of protecting them, while others only choose which cards to grade based on value. If you already know what cards you want to grade, you’re in luck! AA Mint Cards is a certified grading submission center for PSA, SGC, and BGS.

If you’re looking for quick tips on identifying cards that are worth grading, here are two things to consider: condition and value.

Assessing the condition of a card you’re thinking about grading can be broken down into the four main things professional grading companies look for: conditions of the corners, centering, edges, and surface. You want the corners to be sharp, the card to be centered, the edges to be damage-free, and the surface to have no stains or scratches.

If the card appears to be in good condition, look at the current value of the raw card and what the card would be worth in various grades. If the value of the raw card plus the cost to grade it is worth more than a PSA 9 or 10, that’s a no go. A good rule of thumb is that you want to at least double your money. If you can’t sell it graded for double what the raw card is valued at, it’s probably not worth your time or resources to grade. If the card is in good condition and you can double your money (or more!), consider getting the card graded.

Grading Your Cards with PSA

PSA is the leader in authenticating and grading sports and trading cards. PSA graded cards often command a higher value than cards graded by other companies, but the tradeoff is a higher baseline price to grade cards and a longer turnaround time.

PSA encapsulates every trading card in a tamper-evident, sonically sealed case. These attractive, hard plastic cases provide protection from pressure and most damage. Once encased, you can rest assured that your cards will remain secure from further wear.

AA Mint Cards is an authorized PSA grading submission center. We can help you submit your sports and TCG cards for any service level. AA Mint Cards securely ships and provides insurance for your cards while giving you access to real-time updates on your order.

Grading Your Cards with SGC

SGC is the most popular grading company for collectors of vintage cards, but its no up-charge policy and quick turnaround time is becoming a popular option for all collectors.

AA Mint Cards is an SGC grading submission center and the only hobby shop authorized to submit and pick up your cards in person. This eliminates the hassle and time-consuming process of shipping your cards. AA Mint Cards offers a 10-day turnaround for all SGC grading.

Grading Your Cards with Beckett

Beckett Grading Services (BGS) is known for being the only grading company of the big three that offer subgrades. Along with the overall grade, you’ll also see subgrades for centering, corners, edges, and surface on the BGS label. Cards that earn a 10 on all four subgrades earn a BGS Black Label.

AA Mint Cards is a BGS grading submission center. We can help you submit your sports and trading cards for grading, and we also take care of shipping your cards with insurance to BGS.
